March 06 Sims Family ALS Research fundFYI. My Decatur, Alabama friends know how successful our Sims Family ALS Research fundraiser was last Spring. We raised more than $140,000 at that fundraiser alone. Money has continued to trickle in to the fund since then as well. I am excited to let people know where a significant portion of that money went. The board of the Sims Family ALS Research fund made the decision to donate money to the ALS Association. The ALS Association established the Bill Sims Jr. ALS Research fund which will in turn fund stem cell research aimed toward finding a treatment or cure for ALS. That should come as no surprise to those of you that know me. November 14 MDA's Quest Magazine Article Featuring Me?MDA's Quest Magazine contacted me back in June about my blog. I responded to several questions about my blogging habits, why I blog, etc. The article was just published, and I made the cut. Click the link below to see the article. As Dad always told me, "Even a blind hog finds a root every now and then".
October 22 2006 Walk to D'Feet ALS a success! The annual Walk to D'Feet ALS was yesterday. What a success, thanks to my incredible family and friends. Our walking team, Team Never Give Up, raised more than $36,000 this year! Together, we raised more money than any other team in Tennessee. All in, the Nashville Walk raised more than $175,000. I've seen first hand how important this money is to families affected by ALS, so I can't thank my friends and family enough for their incredible generosity. Last week, a fraternity brother who just found out about my condition wrote me a letter. He too has had health problems over the last few years. He said, however, that he was “filthy stinking rich” and that made his situation bearable. What he was saying is that he was wealthy because he had three great kids, a loving wife, and more great friends than he ever imagined. By his standard, I feel like the richest man in the world. I've got two perfect kids, the most beautiful and loving wife I ever imagined, and the best and most generous friends a man could ever hope for. It has reinforced to me that it really doesn't matter what you own…what kind of car you drive, how big your house is, or how much cash you have...what matters is how we live and love. I don't really have a clue what I've done to deserve my riches. What I do know is that God has blessed me beyond my wildest dreams. August 25 2006 Walk to D'feet ALS Kicks OffIt is that time of year already. Titan's football has begun, and so has the kickoff for the 2006 Walk to D'feet ALS. Tara, the kids and I are honored to be the host family for the Nashville area Walk. I just sent an email invitation to join Team Never Give Up, to everyone whose email I could find. If you didn't get an email invitation, and you would like to join the team, or just donate to the ALS Association, click on the link below to go to my walk site. When you get there, you'll see how easy it is to join our team, and/or donate. The Walk will be at Centennial Park, on October, 21st. Please email me if you have any questions at all.
June 23 Strike out ALS nightStrike out ALS night was hosted by the Nashville Sounds (AAA baseball team) last Saturday night. It was a great event that raised several thousand dollars for the TN Chapter of the ALS Association. I've posted a picture of my family in the photo album on the left. Rudy Kalis, the local Channel 4 Sports Anchor, attended the event and is in the picture standing over my left shoulder. Rudy has graciously agreed to be the celebrity host of the 2006 Walk to D'Feet ALS. You'll notice that I'm the one in the middle who looks like a dead man walking (or riding in my case). May 24 Host family for 2006 Nashville Walk to D'feet ALSTara and I are excited to announce that we have been selected to be the host family for the 2006 Nashville Walk to D'feet ALS. We are honored the ALS Association of Middle TN chose our family to represent the many families struggling with ALS in Middle Tennessee for their primary annual fundraiser. The walk will be held Saturday, October 21st, at Centennial Park. Please mark your calendars, and plan on joining our walking team, Team Never Give. Team Never Give Up raised over $30,000 last October, and we need to raise much more than that this year. We are planning a Nashville area fundraiser in September that you are not going to want to miss! I would love to hear any fundraising ideas you have too. Never give up has always been the Sims family motto, and it certainly describes my fight with ALS. I hope you can join us. April 08 ALS Fundraiser Speech added to BlogI had several requests to hear the "Thank You" speech I gave at the ALS Research fundraiser last Saturday. I’ve added the audio file from the digitized speech to the Windows Media Player located on the left of this text. Click on the play button (bottom left button on media player) to hear the seven minute speech. Thanks again to everyone who attended the fundraiser and/or donated their hard earned money, helping us raise over $100,000 for ALS research. I am still blown away by the success of the event...but given the spirit and enthusiasm of all the people that planned and executed the event, I can’t say that I am surprised! If anyone has any digital pictures from the event, please email me a few if possible. Thanks. April 04 The Sims family ALS Research Foundation fundraiser was a Success! Thanks so much to everyone who donated money and/or attended the fundraiser held Saturday night. Together, we raised over $100,000 for ALS research! That is just incredible. I will write more about the fundraiser later, but for now I wanted to point out the article about the fundraiser in today's edition of The Decatur Daily. See the link below to read the article and peruse over 50 pictures of the event. Who knows...there may be a picture of you. By the way, the innovative Decatur Daily even allows you to purchase pictures online. I was impressed with this.
Thanks.
